Arts & Culture
I’m in my Broadway era, if you hadn’t noticed, and I finally saw John Proctor Is The Villain last week. I went in knowing next to nothing and was really moved by the play (and couldn’t stop listening to “Green Light” afterwards). While it was a heavy and serious subject matter, it was well balanced with comedic moments and had truly phenomenal performances by the young actresses. It’s closing on August 31, so go see it before then!
My recent gripes about audience etiquette still hold. I think part of the problem is that so many of these shows become internet famous before people even step foot in the theater, or people are seeing them for the third (or thirteenth) time, and they show up ready to react. Gasping, cackling, clapping mid-line like they’re part of the performance. It really pisses me off and takes me out of the performance. I guess I need to start seeing things earlier in their run instead of waiting until they’re about to close. But wow, is it irritating.
A fun bit of NYC culture - the Staple Street Skybridge in Tribeca is one of those quintessential picturesque little spots that look like something out of a movie set. It was built in the early 1900s to connect the two buildings: a hospital emergency room, and the hospital’s laundry room. They’re both residential buildings now, and I had a fun sidequest last week that took me inside of this elusive bridge. Here’s what it looks like on the inside for those who are curious:
Food
The most popping place on a Saturday night? Bar Bianchi. Great atmosphere and an absolute scene in the best way possible. Insanely loud, but that comes with the territory. Order alllll of the pastas (they’re relatively small portions) + the veal milanese. And a spritz, but that goes without saying.
I feel like I’ve aged out of Happy Hour - it feels like something of a pre-covid bygone era. But I met up with some friends at Emmett’s on Gove for HH last week, and they have a pretty good HH menu - $9 martinis, $11 glasses of wine, and the usual suspect snacks (pigs in a blanket, fries, chicken parm sliders). It’s great if you get there on the early side right when they open, before it gets unimaginably loud (I notice that’s the second time I’ve referenced a place being too loud - is that just a sign of getting old?)
Stopped by Pantry for a matcha over the weekend, and was mentally prepared to be met with a nauseating line. I was pleasantly surprised to find it virtually empty on a Saturday at 1pm. I had the sweet cloud pistachio matcha latte (say that ten times fast). It was good, but a little too sweet for my taste. I’d try just a regular matcha latte next time.
Movies/TV
I finally saw F1 the other day (thankfully NOT the AMC Lincoln Square), and it sure was a fun ride. Was the storyline believable? Not really. Was the villain storyline cringeworthy? Very. But did we get some A+ reaction shots of Guenther Steiner? Hell yeah we did. It was a fun story with a great score and it was extremely entertaining, even if you’re not a huge fan of the sport. Lots of hot guys in cool sunglasses if that’s your thing. Brad Pitt hasn’t looked this good since Ocean’s Eleven.
TV is in it’s flop era, aside from The Gilded Age. Which is fine, because I shouldn’t be spending my summer sitting in front of the TV anyway. I’m just happy we’re free and unshackled from our obligation to watch any more Love Island, though I did enjoy how meme-able and idiotic it was.

Current Obsession
Fragrance brand NOYZ sent me some perfume, and I am genuinely obsessed with the scent Unmute. I typically love a gourmand scent, and this falls into that category with base notes of vanilla and amber - but it has a smoky, woodsy undertone that makes it more sexy than sweet. I’ll be wearing this scent for the remainder of the summer. They also have their scents in solid fragrances too, which I’ll be throwing in my bag to have on hand.
On My Radar
I Cavallini, the new Italian restaurant from team behind The Four Horsemen
Maison Nur, a new “French-American concept” that looks quite moody/sexy
Saint Street Cakes, a new bakery in Fort Greene. There’s been controversial discourse over vintage cakes recently, but I think they’re cute as heck.
The protein soft serve ice cream at Happier Grocery
Until next week -
